Heathers gleaming in the sun, growing on the edges of forests and between the rocks on distant islands. They are a sight that fascinated designer Timo Sarpaneva so much that he decided to incorporate the beautiful colours of heathers in his Kanervikko series of textiles.  The pattern is printed on Finlayson’s textiles using a uniquely precise digital printing method that brings the colours to life. Kanervikko is part of Ambiente, a stylish collection of household textiles that is characterised by washed colouring that has an element of randomness in its creation.Sarpaneva was known as an innovator, so we wanted to also blaze a new trail and develop something even more sustainable than before. In addition to cotton, this fabric contains 50% Tencel, a lyocell fibre that is one of the most ecological textile materials in the world. Tencel is made of FSC certified pulp. The production consumes considerably less water and energy, and in addition, the biodegradable chemicals used in the fibre production can be reused.Tencel feels luxuriously silky to the touch and cool, soft and smooth on the skin. Sateen weave was the natural choice for the new material, because it gives a beautiful subtle sheen to the fabric and reproduces the glow of the colours. The thread count (TC) is 240 TC, which is a high thread count. The higher the thread count, the denser the fabric. The density of the fabric makes sateen particularly well suited for people with allergies. To keep the sheets beautifully shiny and soft, iron or press them in a mangle after washing.Sleep well at night. The duvet cover set comes with a five-year guarantee. The product has been granted the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX certificate, indicating that the product does not contain harmful chemicals and is safe to use.Story of the Kanervikko pattern: In the 1950s, when Armi Ratia and Uhra-Beata Simberg-Ehrström were in the early stages of their careers as artists, they invited Timo Sarpaneva and his bride over for coffee. Timo had just completed a large cotton fabric collection named Karelia. They had a nice chat over coffee until the reason for the invitation became clear: Timo had used “the colour of beetroot” in his fabrics, which was the same colour Uhra had used in her rya rugs. He shouldn’t have used it!Timo was confused. He hadn’t thought of the colour as the colour of beetroot. Fragrant heathers gleaming in the sun, growing on the edges of forests and between the rocks on distant islands – that was the landscape that inspired Timo’s colour palette. Uhra and Armi would get to keep their beetroot, and Timo would share his heather purple with the world in his textiles and rya rugs.About the creation of the Ambiente technique: The Ambiente technique was created in the early 1960s thanks to a broken paper printing machine at the Rosenlew paper mill in Pori. Timo Sarpaneva, a master of Finnish design, saw the error as an opportunity. “This is like an aquarelle painting, let’s build on this and forget about traditional printing. If something is born spontaneously, it should be studied in more detail,” Sarpaneva said. The seemingly random patterns were carefully controlled. The printing method was subsequently globally patented. The method was later used in the textile industry, with Ambiente fabrics produced not only by Finlayson’s Forssa factory but also by Tampella and Tikkurilan Silkki. “I used the massive printing machine to paint landscapes and memories on fabric,” Sarpaneva said years later.
