“The sea can take any colour because it reflects colours like a mirror. In the archipelago, the sea is blue only in summer. Often, the blueness is broken by white streaks of foam. Did you know that when I painted the seascape with the printing machine at the Tampella factory in Lapinniemi, I used water to create the waves? These fabrics are really aquarelle paintings.” Timo Sarpaneva

Sininen meri is part of Finlayson’s Ambiente home textile collection, which is based on the printed fabrics created by Timo Sarpaneva, one of the greatest industrial designers of our time. Sarpaneva painted the original Blue Sea pattern directly on the fabric with a printing machine. He and his pressmen developed the unique painting technique by chance. The method become known as the Ambiente technique. Fabrics printed with this technique became hugely popular, and they continue to be one of the best examples of 1960s design and Finnish printing expertise.

Finlayson uses digital printing to reproduce the Sininen meri pattern on the sateen duvet covers. Digital printing enables using an unlimited number of colours, which makes the originally vibrant colours come to life.

Sarpaneva was always looking for new ways of doing things, which is why we wanted to introduce a new, more sustainable material in the duvet covers. In addition to cotton, the fabric contains 50% Tencel, a lyocell fibre that is one of the most ecological textile materials in the world.Tencel is made of FSC certified pulp. Compared with cotton, the production consumes considerably less water and energy, and in addition, the biodegradable chemicals used in the fibre production can be reused.

Tencel feels silky to the touch and cool, soft and smooth on the skin. Sateen weave was the natural choice for the new material, because it gives a beautiful subtle sheen to the fabric and reproduces the glow of the colours. The thread count (TC) of the material is 240 TC, which is a high thread count. The higher the thread count, the denser the fabric. The density of the fabric makes sateen particularly well suited for people with allergies. To keep the sheets beautifully shiny and soft, iron or press them in a mangle after washing.

The product has been granted the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX certificate, indicating that the product contains no harmful chemicals and is safe to use. The product comes with a five-year guarantee.

Story of the Ambiente technique: The unique printing technique was created by chance when a paper printing machine malfunctioned at Rosenlew paper mill in Pori, splashing dye all over the sheet of paper. Timo Sarpaneva, one of the greatest industrial designers and artists of our time, was supervising the printing process and saw the mistake as an opportunity: “If something is born spontaneously, it should be studied in more detail,” he said and began exploring the technique in more detail with professional pressmen from Tampere. Later on, the technique was used in industrial production, both in paper printing and the textile and clothing industry. The seemingly random patterns were carefully controlled. “I used the massive printing machine to paint landscapes and memories on fabric,” Sarpaneva described years later.
