Although it would be impossible and unnecessary to rank the world’s saunas in order of importance, it has to be said that the sauna at Tamminiemi, formerly the official residence of the President of Finland, is of particular historical significance. It is likely to have been the place where, at a turbulent time in history, important decisions were made that allowed peace and prosperity to continue to be enjoyed in other saunas all over Finland. The custodians of Tamminiemi understood the most important aspect of the sauna – its spiritual dimension. Without the sauna, many thorny issues would have gone unresolved, many romances unrequited and many friendships unmade.
